Mark Story will take over as Chair from September, succeeding Simon Ardon.
Nominations for the Spring Pub of the Season include The Raddle, Hollington and Vernon Arms, Sudbury. The Hart is ineligible due to the 12-month landlord rule but may be considered for a Rising Star award. Voting will take place at the May meeting.
The branch is cooperating with Ashbourne Branch for Pub of the Year judging. Visits have been completed to several pubs including White Hart, Alton; Red Lion, Checkley; Cavendish, Doveridge; Night Inn, Uttoxeter; Old Swan, Uttoxeter; The Plough, Uttoxeter; Horse & Dove, Uttoxeter; and The Vaults, Uttoxeter.
The Grade-II* White Lion in Bartholdy, Cheshire, closed in September 2023 after Marston’s lease ended. Restoration work has started following listed building consent granted in August 2024, but progress is slow with no reopening date. The pub is an Asset of Community Value and locals are growing frustrated.
The branch is campaigning for all pubs to display price lists, addressing a common lack of visible pricing in many establishments.
Several beer festivals are upcoming including Nottingham Castle Beer Festival (24-25 April), Ludlow Castle SIBA Festival, 38th Stockport Beer & Cider Festival (8-10 May), Chester Beer Festival (18-20 June), Shrewsbury Beer Festival (23-26 September), and Derby Heritage Beer Festival (14-17 October). The Burton Bridge Ale Festival runs May 1-4, and the ninth Burton Ale Trail is scheduled for June 4-7.
Current branch membership is reported as 89, though verification is needed due to recent new members joining.
The Butchers Arms in Bramshall is set to reopen within 2 to 3 weeks from April 1st. The former landlady of the Shant, Sarah, is taking over. The pub will feature a second-hand pump and offer Tower Brewery and Roebuck beers on draught.

The winner of the Champion Winter Beer of Britain 2026 was announced at the Liverpool Beer Festival. The overall winner was Beer Street, a rye bitter from London Brewing. Second place went to Black Gold, a session stout from Cairngorm, and third place to Baltic Trader Export Stout from Green Jack brewery.
The government is proposing changes to national planning rules in England that would reduce protections for pubs, only protecting the last pub in an area from conversion or demolition. CAMRA urges members and the public to email their MPs using the e-lobby tool to oppose these changes.
The Burton CAMRA Beer Festival will take place from Thursday, March 19th to Saturday, March 21st at Burton Town Hall. Members are encouraged to promote the event. More details are available on the Burton CAMRA website.

The branch has scheduled meetings for the year with the next meeting planned for April 8th at the Tavern, Denstone (TBC). A tasting session is proposed for April at the Night Inn. A social event is planned for the Burton Beer Festival on March 19-21 with bus/train travel organized.
